Abstract

This chapter starts by giving an account of the 13 May 1969 Incident in Malaysia, and it was an event which helped to define the views and beliefs of an entire generation of leaders and citizens on the issues regarding race and religion. In fact the two Singaporeans met a number of people to discuss the topic of race, and one of them was a 73-year-old man called Ramli, who spoke of the contemporary Malay Dilemma. Another man called Anthony of Kuantan also described the bicycle theory of race. This chapter also looks into why the governments, media channels, corporations and civic organizations in Malaysia and Singapore prefer not to talk about racial issues. Last but not least, it questions whether Chinese are necessarily more equal than the other ethnic groups in Singapore.
